Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by a persistent cycle of unwanted thoughts and urges (obsessions) that lead to repetitive actions (compulsions).
Symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD symptoms typically emerge in late childhood or early adulthood and can vary widely from person to person.
Obsessions
Intrusive and distressing thoughts, images, or urges. Common obsessions include fears of contamination or germs, a need for things to be in perfect order, aggressive impulses, or concerns about causing harm to others.
Compulsions
Repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession. Examples include excessive hand washing, checking and re-checking locks or appliances, arranging objects in a specific way, or repeating certain phrases or prayers.
Our Approach
Living with OCD can feel like a constant battle against your own mind. Our approach is to work together to break the cycle and help you regain control. Our care model focuses on a combination of evidence-based therapies and skill-building strategies:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
At Elevate Wellness & Psychiatry, we use specific techniques like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is considered the gold standard for OCD treatment. ERP helps you gradually confront your fears without performing the compulsive rituals, allowing you to learn that you can tolerate the anxiety and that the feared outcome doesn't happen.
Medication Management
When appropriate, we can integrate medication to help reduce the severity of symptoms and make therapy more effective.
Mindfulness and Stress Reduction
We incorporate strategies to help you manage the anxiety that drives the OCD cycle, empowering you with tools for long-term well-being.
